A PLAN FOR CHURCH RE-OPENING
UNITY-WASHINGTON UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
Prepared by Pastor John R. Allen III
In crafting a plan for the re-opening of Unity-Washington UMC for worship services, the current ‘requirements’ of the Maryland State Governor's Order 20-05-13-01 dated May 13, 2020 for re-opening churches was reviewed, as well as other documents which were presented as 'recommendations'.
As a result of the aforementioned document reviews, and collaboration/consensus relative to same, the following protocols were developed for the re-opening of the sanctuary for worship:
The entrance areas of the church, and the sanctuary, will be ‘paperless’, with all removable items/materials isolated from access.
All hymnals, Bibles, tissue boxes, etc. will be removed from the pews; nothing will be in the pews, pew pockets, etc.
No paper bulletins, or handouts of any kind will be available, nor distributed.
A ‘paperless bulletin’ and other Order of Worship items/visuals will be displayed on the church video screen, as is common place for this congregation.
Hand Sanitizers will be located in a number of accessible areas.
A central ‘collection/offering’ container will be located in a prominent location.
All folks entering the church and its’ sanctuary for worship, are to wear a 'face mask' covering their nose and mouth. The Pastor may temporarily lower his mask while distanced from the congregation at the pulpit/altar area.
When the congregation arrive at the church on Sunday, a church member (aka: ‘greeter’) will meet the congregant at the church’s access/egress door. At Unity-Washington, the 'front entrance' door (Main street side) will be the prime point of access/egress for that church, with the Oak Street side entrance available for folks with special needs.
The ‘greeter’ mentioned above, will assist each person/family member with ‘social distancing based seating’ (i.e. 7’ apart, with every other pew vacant).
If requested, families will be seated together without separation
All other individuals arriving without a family member will be seated in accordance with the 7’ 'social distancing' standard.
The worship services will be shortened and be approximately 30-35 minutes in duration.
At the end of the service(s), the aforementioned ‘greeters’ will dismiss the congregants beginning with the pews closest to the egress door and working toward the front of the church.
